ACER HAS BEEN HACKED! Info from more than 30k customers compromised
Do you own an Acer computer? Well, you might have been hacked.
In case you have bought something on Acer's website between May 12, 2015 and April 28, 2016 your credit card information may have been stolen.
Hackers made off with the names, addresses, card numbers, expiration dates and three-digit security codes of a reported 34,500 customers.
Only social security numbers are safe since there were stored on another server and there was no reported evidence of unauthorized third-party access.
According to security firm ZDnet, affected customers belongs to Canada, Puerto Rico and United States.
What is the reason for this data breach?
It is still an unknown fact. However, Acer stated that with the usage of some advanced methods hackers made it somehow to find a vulnerability in their defense system.
To all affected users, they are sending a notice: "Due to an unauthorized access of third party, the credit card details of some Acer's online store users is at risk. We are taking immediate steps for the security of your cards. We are taking help from the best security experts."
Acer VP Customer Service, Mark Groveunder said following: “We took immediate steps to re-mediate this security issue upon identifying it, and we are being assisted by outside cyber-security experts,” he further added that “We have reported this issue to our credit card payment processor. We have also contacted and offered full cooperation to federal law enforcement.”
In case you are concerned, but you still didn't receive a letter from Acer, you may want to review
your credit card for signs of identity theft.
